Go to the theatre in Kimonos, vol.7
June HAKATAZA Grand Kabuki "ICHINOTANI FUTABA GUNKI KUMAGAI JINYA" in matinee show,"HONCHO NIJUSHIKO JUSSHUKO in the evening show

I went to see June HAKATAZA Grand Kabuki, special performance with the announcement where Nakamura Shibajaku is taking new stage name of Nakamura Jakuemon V. I made the coverage of this memorial performance of the name succession of Jakuemon V for the magazine "Kimono Salon 2016 spring and summer edition"(now on sale) and also enjoyed seeing it with readers of this magazine at the Kabukiza, then the performance came to the HAKATAZA this time!

From Fukuoka airport, the subway takes you to the HAKATAZA, directory connected to Nakasu-Kawabata station in about eight minutes. The seats of the theatre are arranged to see the stage nicely, and this theatre is popular among the fans of not only Kabuki, but also variety of theatrical arts.

In the matinee, Kyogen "ICHINOTANI FUTABA GUNKI, KUMAGAI JINYA "was performed. During the battle between Genji clan and Heiji clan, Sagami, (Jakuemon V played) worried about her son, Kojiro's first battle, then she visited her husband, Kumagai Naozane at Jinya (base camp in the battle field) and knew Naozane beat the enemy, Tairano Atsumori. It means Atsumori was going to be decapitated. Sagami stayed at the Kubi Jikken (inspection decapitated head of samurai) with Atsumori's mother, Fujino-kata and found the head was not Atsumori's but her son's. Her husband, Naozane, instead sacrificed his own son in place of Atsumori. It is one of the masterpiece of Gidayu-kyogen in which drew misery of war. JakuemonV's marvelous expressions of mother's love and grief made the audiences sympathized more than ever, and I saw peoples wiping tears with handkerchief here and there in the theatre.

In the evening show, following of the announcement of name succession of Jakuemon V, Kyogen HONCHO NIJUSHIKO, JUSSHUKO was performed.

Nakamura Jakuemon IV set the Sanhime (three princesses-Tokihime, Yukihime and Yaegakihime) the standard, and marvelously performed these roles. Jakuemon V carried on his father's legendary techniques and played Tokihime of KAMAKURA SANDAIKI and Yukihime of KINKAKUJI at the Kabukiza. And he played Yaegakihime of HONCHO NIJUSHIKO this time, so completed the roles of Sanhime. At Kudoki, the scene in which beautiful princess Yaegaki proclaimed her love for her fiancée (Takeda Katsuyori), Jakuemon V performed Yaegakihime gracefully and passionately. I recognized the birth of Heisei era's "Ohimesama-yakusha" (specialist in role of princess)!

It was June and we changed our kimonos from Awase (kimono with lining) to Hitoe (kimono without lining) in the closet. I saw many audiences in kimonos in the theater. Hakata has Hakata-ori, textile produced around Hakata ward. The weaving techniques came from So (a name of old China) in the Kamakura era and originally developed in this ward. Kuroda Nagamasa, the landlord of Fukuoka, made it a tribute the Hakata-ori to the Tokugawa shogun in the Edo era. So Kenjo-ori (tribute textile) represents Hakata-ori today. At Sennen-Kobo in Hakata Riverain located next to the HAKATAZA, I found lovely Obi (kimono-belt) for summer, Ryoka"

It looked delicate like a lace, flexible and durable. Light yellow and sophisticated green were also available, but clean white seemed to be enjoyable for a variety of coordination and situations.

How about visiting Hakataza with wearing an Obi of Hakata-ori in early summer?
