歌舞伎座での観劇やおしゃれなレストランでのランチなどは、バッグは小さければ小さいほどお洒落に見えるもの。せっかくのきもの姿、大きなバッグを持つと途端に野暮ったくなるので、荷物が多い場合はサブバッグはクロークやロッカーに預け、財布や携帯などの必需品だけを小さめのバッグに入れて持つと、それだけでお洒落感が何倍にもアップします。 八月の納涼歌舞伎の演目や出演者も発表されました。きものや小物を整えて、そろそろ夏芝居の観劇準備も始めたいですね。

June Kabuki Program at Kabukiza Theatre
Meigetsu Hachiman Matsuri (The Autumn Hachiman Festival) in the matinee On a spell of nice weather during the rainy season, I went to see the matinee at Kabukiza Theatre. Meigetsu Hachiman Matsuri (the Autumn Hachiman Festival) is the story about a simple merchant, Shinsuke who came to Edo (old name of Tokyo) to sell the Echigo chijimi. The scene is set in Edo in festive mood. Echigo chijimi is a kind of cloth material for summer kimono now, and it is produced in Ojiya area of Echigo（old name of Niigata prefecture）. In the Edo era (1603-1867), the number of the peddler of Echigo chijimi increased and at the peak it reached 2000. It is said that they visited in order to do business all around the country in those days. It is interesting that we can find the custom of trading in the Edo era through the conversation of people in this play. Shinsuke has been in love with Miyokichi, a cool geisha-girl. He took all his money to get her his own at her request. But finally, this ardent merchant learned that he was betrayed by her, and his love turned to anger which drove him to kill her in the rain on the day of festival. This story is based on the real incident that the Eitai bridge collapsed down on the day of Hachiman festival in the Edo era, and the dramatic last scene was murder in the rain using real water. This is a tragic story, but if you are a kimono lover, it is worthwhile to see it to learn the customs of kimono dealing in the Edo era. In this play many people bought a roll of chijimi for the summer kimono, similarly I went shopping for stylish items matching a summer kimono. I found an attractive summer bag at the shop of “The Showcase by DELUPIN” in GINZA SIX which just opened in April. This is the natural material clutch bag of SERPUI, the brand produced by Brazilian female designer. The shape and the colors of the bag are original and the other model has gorgeous bijou on the top. I bought the beautiful bag in the color combination of red and white for my summer kimono style. At the theatre or the fancy restaurant, the smaller the bag the more fashionable you look. When you are in kimono, a big bag make you look unsophisticated, so if you leave your luggage at a cloak and carry a small bag which only your necessities are in, you will look stylish many times more. There was the announcement of lineup of the plays in August Grand Kabuki at Kabukiza Theatre. Let’s start to prepare for going to the theatre in summer kimono with sophisticated items.
