Bunraku –Japanese Puppet Theatre_ at National Theatre
“Hiragana Seisuiki”(Records of the Battles between the Minamoto and Taira Clans in the 12th Century)

Bunraku performance “Hiragana Seisuiki” had played at National Theatre until December 19th. It is the historical play about the Battles between the Minamoto and Taira Clans in the 12th Century, and this play featured the story of Higuchi Jiro and Kajiwara Genda. This act was often performed as Kabuki too, and this time the composition of acts helped the audience to understand the whole story which described what is the Samurai spirit including the tragedy of the sacrifice their own child for the loyalty to their landlord. Especially the characteristic of that play was “Sasabiki-no-dan” act featured Ofude, the female character. It is rare for women to star in the story about war.

Kimono Salon magazine held the event, “Enjoying Bunraku at the Hokyoji-temple in Kyoto” for the readers. It had gorgeous line up of performers, Toyotake Yoshihodayu (tayu,/narrator), Tsuruzawa Kantaro (Shamisen player), Yoshida Kanya Yoshida Kantaro Yoshida Seigoro, Yoshida Minoyuki (puppeteer). The Hokyoji-temple is famous for a collection of precious dolls. In the main hall of a such doll temple, two Bunraku programs performed under only candle lights was exceptionally charm and I felt like to be into the Edo era(1603~1867).

The costumes of doll were produced by Yutaka Terada from Kyoshibori-Terada. As the pictured right, the asanoha(leaf of linen) shibori pattern is usually created with a printed cloth. But as pictured left, It looks quite deiffernet impression because of the craftsman actually made the full shibori print on the cloth.

In 2018 it will be busy year for Bunraku. Toyotake Sakihodayu will succeed the stage name of Takemoto Oritayu this coming January. Yoshida Kosuke, a puppeteer will succeed the stage name of Yoshida Tamasuke this coming April. It is nice to go to see Bunraku in the shibori obi(sash for Kimono) or Kimono, which makes not only women but also dolls look beautiful.
