Architectural Alchemy
Four awesome Asian talents
Long enamored of European models rooted in the creativity of ancient Greeks and Romans, architectural history is turning a corner. Rounding the bend into the future, those who make buildings for a living are eyeing other cultures for inspiration. Ripe for appreciation are the traditional and indigenous forms of other regionsAsia, the Middle East, and Africa.
A new generation of architects with understanding of these cultures is stepping onto the world stage, shouldering our great expectations of new sensibilities and solutions. On these pages we introduce Kateigaho International readers to four Asian architects currently enjoying renown and likely to loom even larger on the world scene in years to come.
They hail from New York, Tokyo, Seoul, and Beijing. They respect the past as the springboard to a future that will increasingly demand careful use of land and natural resources, concern for sustainable technologies, deft solutions to urban tumult, and above all innovation.
In fact, they are at the forefront in stretching the definition of materialsone of the hottest themes today, not only in architecture, but across the spectrum of environmental studies, science, engineering, and other fields. They work with bamboo, glass, stone, plastic, wood, plywood, fiberglass, Corten steel, carbon fiber, polymer films, and more. This is where alchemy enters the picture: In the hands of these four architects, these materials do indeed turn into gold.
